Away and Back Home

Sometimes you just don't realize how much you need a break from the daily grind.  Mind you, my daily grind isn't so grindy these days.  So I was surprised at how refreshing our recent trip was.  We spent a long weekend in Connecticut at my father-in-law's house.  And it was quite lovely.
We went up there to celebrate Mike's grandfather's 90th birthday.  I love that our kids were able to be present at their great-grandfather's 90th birthday party!  The fact that they know him and have memories of time spent with him is pretty cool.  I lost 3 of my grandparents before 8th grade.  My mom's mother passed away the summer before my senior year of college.  And it was really hard.  So I love that my kids enjoy such great relationships with their grandparents and can even count a great-grandparent in the mix.

Aside from the fun of a surprise party, Mike's 3 siblings were there with their families as well.  For the first time ever, we all stayed at his Dad's house.  Twenty people in total.  It was crazy and fun and we had a blast.  Lots of great bonding time, everyone got along for the most part and I felt like it was easy to get a little space if I needed a break from the chaos.  I came home feeling relaxed and refreshed.  The only bummer for me was that I battled a migraine the afternoon of the party so that definitely put a damper on the party (for me).  It was still a great weekend, filled with lots of fun and also exhaustion from chasing Chloe around that enormous house!

On the flip side of enjoying a get-away, I am always surprised at how happy I am to be back home again.  Familiar territory, home base, our comfort zone.  Vegging in my own living room at night, everyone tucked neatly into their own bed, throwing in a load of laundry or making a late night snack without a second thought.

I think it's good to enjoy both:  the luxury of time away and the comfort of being back home again.

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip and coming home, too.
