Shoot!

Do I have the date right?  Have I really NOT written a blessed thing since January 19th?!
That is just plain crazy...

I think I've lost my knack for writing.  That is, if I ever really had one at all.
Every time I think of something I might want to write a post about, I get lost in the process.

It seems boring...limited...not worthwhile at all.

I can't recall if I have mentioned this quote before but here goes.  If you know me at all, you know I have never been an athlete.  Well, one of the girls that lived across the hall from me during freshmen year of college was a basketball player.  And she had this awesome motivational basketball poster that somehow always resonated with me, despite my lack of any specific athletic ability.  The quote was this:

"When you're on, shoot.  When you're off, shoot till you're on."

It's amazing how much that quote helps me, especially when things get really tough.  It somehow gets me focused when I need it the most.

In that spirit, I'm just going to shoot for a few tidbits about what's been going on around here.

  • The JOB:  It has definitely started off at a very slow pace.  Which is both good and bad.  I recently had an extended conversation with my supervisor regarding whether or not this job is a good match for me in terms of schedule/requirements.  Clinically, it's a perfect fit for my background and experience.  But there are a couple of concerns that have come up including- my ability to be available for emergency situations, my ability to schedule things that are a bit spur of the moment, the amount of driving involved and how that effects the practicality of this job in terms of income.  I was completely worked up about this 2 days ago.  I have been thinking it over and over and over.  I don't know what to do.  Today I am leaning more towards stepping out of this position.  I have been checking on a couple other job prospects in the meantime, just to see if anything is available right now.  I could also ask about other positions within this company.  The facts are pretty clear: I don't have the control over scheduling that I thought I would.  That lack of control in the context of paying for regular childcare isn't great.   It bums me out because I felt like I had really thought through this position- I thought I asked all the right questions.  I have been feeling really good about working.  But once I would take on additional clients and try to meet their needs, it's going to go south very quickly and I know it.  There is an obvious answer- I just don't want to let anyone down.  I plan to stew a bit more over the weekend and then take action on Monday.

  • All 3 kids have ear infections...first time I've achieved this parenting feat.  I know you are jealous!  Actually, they are all doing okay.  3 different antibiotics with different doses and schedules.  If I manage to keep it all straight for 10 days, it will be a miracle!

  • Parenting question of the moment:  If you have a child with frequent ear infections and/or tubes placed--what is your pediatrician's rule regarding "frequency of ear infections before we start talking about tubes"?  I feel that Liam should definitely be considered and actually Chloe is on her way there as well.  She has had an ear infection per month since November.  And the last one was harder to treat.  I need to revisit this with our doctors but just wanted to get some input.  The practice we use is on the conservative side, which I like in general.  I just think the ear infection thing needs to be reviewed.  Michael only gets maybe one ear infection per year so he is clearly not a candidate for tubes but the other 2?  They've had more than their fair share!

  • In other news: Chloe continues to try out the whole potty thing, Michael can now tie his shoes and is rapidly becoming a reader, and Liam is taller than Michael for the moment and his reading skills are developing as well.  I am anxiously awaiting our TAX RETURN.  I am hoping to use the money wisely and get us over the hump into building a sense of security.  And the more ambitious side of me would really love to start saving for a house because our current one is feeling smaller by the moment.  And having only one bathroom is getting very crazy as well! We shall see how things go.

Well, that wasn't so bad after all ;)

Both Hailey and Sean have had tubes, twice. Sean got tubes initially because when he got infections they were hard to treat and the dr. were concerned with giving him so many different antibiotics and growing a tolerance to them. Match that with a lose of hearing from constant fluid in his ear. Easy decision to get tubes. He did get a new set until last year and that was not because of infections but the fluid causing a mild hearing loss again.
Hailey had more frequent infections and a mild hearing loss so we opted to get her tubes as well. The hearing issue was my biggest concern at their ages. That always tipped the scales for me to do it each time. I never regretted getting them done and if you need a doctor we got to Dupont in DE and see Dr. Cook. He is great and has done all of their ear tubes. HOpe this helps.

I'm sorry the job is not turning out as expected. I hope you can either make it work or find something else. Sorry also about the frequent ear infections. We were lucky in that regard, neither of ours got them very often, despite Noah being in day care from age 1-4.

I know this feeling! Much like what I was feeling when I posted today.

As far as tubes go... I am not a doctor, but Michael has had only one or two ear infections in the two years since we've had him on allergy medicine. Before that he had several which kind of freaked me out because Harper had had none.

He would start to have sinus trouble from his allergies, couldn't clear his nose, and it all backed up and caused repeated sinus and ear infections. Just something random to throw out there...

Kelsey- Not random at all my friend :) We have done daily allergy medicine with Liam. It worked over the summer months but not as well this winter which is a bummer. I also don't know that I love the idea of him having to take daily allergy meds at such a young age. That bothers me along with the frequent antibiotics.
