My two cents on some things that are currently in the news...
*The Duggar's 19th child in progress: They are taking alot of heat, right? I feel like it isn't my place to judge them. I personally cannot imagine being pregnant that many times (even with twins in the mix) & I don't know how Michelle Duggar's body has managed this--I kind of marvel at that--she must be superwoman when it comes to recovery from pregnancy, etc. It bothers me to hear some of the vulgar comments made about them--they seem like nice people. If they are able to support their family and care for the children, who am I to judge?
*President Obama's pending speech to school children...Have I missed something here? Why is this so earth-shattering? Does any parent honestly think that one brief speech on education will somehow poison the minds of their offspring? There are far worse things on T.V. every single day and I just don't see how this speech is going to do any harm. And I would feel the same way if John McCain were president and giving the same type of speech. Sometimes politics takes itself WAY too seriously.
*Jon and Kate Gosselin--enough already! I used to really enjoy their show but in the past year or so, have lost interest. If everyone else would lose interest, then at least those poor kids would get a little break from the spotlight.
I know there are many more important things going on in the world at large but those are the things I keep hearing about...so what do you think? I'm interested...

great idea, j-girl! *duggers- ah? really? 19? ah? I'm not sure I ever contemplated the 18 they have... so at this point, I'm still lost. I don't know ANYTHING about them other than: they have a lot of kids and a tv show and maybe the oldest just got married.
*Obama's speech- right there with ya. Him or McCain, or Bushie, or any sitting prez. I LOVE your comparision of daily TV vs 1 speech!
* Gosselins- ah? Sorry chica, we don't have cable so I'm not really in the know except what I read at Dr office waiting rooms! But the Gosselins were in the UK gossip mag on the plane (seriously). I think there ought to be a blackout on this one, for the sake of the kids. I mean, c'mon - the govt can go in and take kids all OVER the place, but because it's on TV we give them a pass to screw up the wee ones? it ain't right.
and there's my 3 cents for the night!
Ah, the pop culture . . . I love it and hate it all at the same time ;)
The Duggars: okay, I'll admit that I have a little family crush on them. My sister thinks that they should quit, since their oldest son and his wife are now expecting their first child, but I say go for it. They are mentally, physically, financially, and spiritually able to provide for those children. I'm not saying that everyone should have 19 kids - some people cannot handle one - but I don't understand why they get criticized so much in such a "Live and let live, do what makes you happy" kind of country, you know?
Pres. Obama's speech: I don't think it's a good idea, and that's not because I am anti- Pres. Obama. It wouldn't matter if the sitting pres. was Rep. or Dem. or whatever, I still wouldn't think it was a good idea. I just don't like the idea of cutting parents out. I agree that pop culture/television already takes parental supervision out of the equation, and a lot of parents are completely fine with that, which causes a lot of problems for kids and society. I think that even more than the speech, it was the accompanying lesson plans/pledges that had some parents upset.
The Gosselins: Oh man, I feel so badly for those kids. I'm not judging, I know marriages break-up, but that sad thing about it all is that the legacy those children will have of their parents' marriage is a bitter television show and sniping interviews in tabloids. Jon and Kate say they only do the show "for the kids" but it's time to let it go -- for the kids.
Just my rambling two cents . . . :)
I really like hearing different views on things! One other thing I will say about the president's speech is this: Why not invite parents to attend the speech as well, view from home/work OR why not have some additional info. made available via website or mailing to fill parents in--that way, if they want to further the discussion with their kids, they have a little foundation for it.
Personally, if my kids were school age, I would just ask them what they thought and try to figure out what they took away from it.
I want to provide guidance for my kids but as they get older, I would like them to feel free to question things and to develop their own ideas.
Or just give parents the option to have their kids sit out on the speech if they really feel that strongly opposed. Some thing with the lesson plan idea- give schools/teachers the option to develop their own plan for using the content of the speech.
I DO understand the concerns but I guess I just thought there were some easy solutions without all this hoopla...
Sorry to comment twice in my own post BUT, I saw this morning that Jon Gosselin said he "despises" Kate. Is this really necessary? Going along with Aimee's thought, do their children really need any more of this crud out for public consumption? And Kristi- Blackout needed- definitely! And I didn't have to go paging through a newspaper or magazine to see this..it was right on Yahoo's homepage. I'll admit that I do get sucked in by celebrity gossip but this is one I just DON'T want to hear about anymore.
