Another topic entirely: Vacuum Cleaners

I am on the hunt for a vacuum cleaner that
a)works well on both carpet and hardwood
and
b)is not a PAIN IN THE NECK to clean (filters, etc.)

My old vacuum plus the one I just purchased recently are both HORRIBLE due to the frequency of times I have to clean out the filters to insure good performance.  I have not invested in a more expensive model but am looking into that now because I can't STAND rinsing out filters so often.

What are you using and how do you like it?

I have a Eureka TheBoss Smart Vac. I read about it in Consumer Reports...it was rated best reasonable vacuum or whatever. It was $75. I've had it for 6 years now...and it still works like new. It has a bag...because I HATED my bagless vacuum. Cleaning filters out is so much grosser than just changing out a bag. I don't understand why it is even a selling feature.

However, it isn't great on hard floors. I would love advice on how to clean those...I use a broom, but I never feel I get up all the little crumbs. Also, it is heavy...so doing stairs is a struggle. But it has terrific suction and doesn't take up a lot of storage space and has a hose feature that is great for little messes, etc. And it is cheap...did I mention that ;) I always dream about having a really nice vacuum someday...but I can't really imagine spending that much money on a cleaning tool ;)

We have an Oreck and it was... not inexpensive, but I do like it a lot. The only complaint I have is that I am not totally used to using a separate machine to use all the attachments - but man, I hate vacuuming a lot less than I used to. It works well (I think) on wood and on carpet and hand-held is great for hard to reach/detail spots - I LOVE it for cleaning out the car.

we have a crappy vacuum, and a vacuum repair shop that tells me it will be open the next day from 10-2 and then, after I load up the machine into the car and make a special trip down there... isn't open at all.

(lights on? check. sign with hours clearly saying they're open? check. doors unlocked? doh! a live person to answer the phone and tell us WTH? double doh)

so please follow this up with what you got and how it goes. have you posted on fb too?

I think my solution is the bagged vacuum- no filter to clean and that is really my main gripe.
Kristi--No posting on FB for me until Easter Sunday. I've been drinking some soda but have remained true to my "no Facebook" promise! That stinks about the vaccum shop. Would it be less expensive just to look for something new?
