Okay, so given that there were 4 different fires within hours of each other early on Saturday morning (2 in my township), the township has now declared a "State of Emergency". There is a township meeting Tuesday night to discuss precautions and to get volunteers for a town watch. We were given 2 flyers with details on clearing off front or back porches, keeping your yard clear of anything unnecessary, etc.
Our porches aren't particularly cluttered but this afternoon, I did take the cushions off our porch furniture and put several other potentially flamable items into our basement. We keep both porch lights on all night. Normally, we keep our outdoor trash cans on our back porch during the winter months but they are now at the end of our yard.
I sure hope these precautions do their job. More importantly, I hope the powers that be do THEIR job, track these a-holes down and string them up by their toes. These fires are happening all over the area- with no apparent rhyme or reason. The feeling is that no one is safe. It is truly terrifying.
I need to post about it for my own stress relief. But part of me feels like I am just glorifying the acts of sadistic whack-jobs (that's a legimate diagnosis in my book)...I am giving these people what they want--attention, power, etc. But it's too much anxiety for me to take quite frankly. I sort of calmed down about it for a few days but now I am back to feeling like a sitting duck.
Please keep this situation in your prayers...
*SURVEY: If you were worried right before bed would you a)drink a cup of hot tea OR b)drink a beer? Remember, I have to get up for work tomorrow, so excess is not an option!!!

Oh...I've been following this story on the news (we're just a bit away in Bucks County). This sounds so so scary. I'd be buying a few fire safe boxes for all my pictures/important documents/etc...worst case scenario then at least those things would be safe.
Hey, and since you are in Chester County, we should TOTALLY meet in real life. If you are off this summer, we should meet at a park in between us or at the Please Touch Museam or something. We don't have to wait until summer, of course, but with school and work it may be difficult to go that far. ;)
I am SO SORRY about all this, it sounds terribly terribly scary. I will certainly be keeping your community in my prayers and please keep us posted.
I was watching a segment about this on MSNBC and thinking about you. It was good advice that Giselle gave regarding fire safes. I would also play (as to not scare the boys) act "fireman crawl to safety" with the boys. Put hats on them and tell them they are firemen asleep in bed who need to crawl to safety. You don't even need to talk about fire itself because I believe word association would be big enough. Seriously. We did this with my daycare kids many long years ago just to be safe and it wasn't traumatic for them but I feel the combination would make sense to their little brains in the event heaven forbid. Every family should have a safe meeting place that is specific and it isn't hard for little people to grasp this. Just be careful not to scare them. Let them think it is a game and fun to do.
I swear this is the craziest thing and I know how scared you must be.
I've been thinking about you a TON. I can't believe these people have gotten away with this for so long. I feel so anxious for your sake. If it helps, imagine little bits of your worry being absorbed by us...
I would drink a beer. Or a glass of wine.
Also, YES my husband is a HUGE Penn State fan (he's from central PA, remember? Carlisle in Cumberland County). Also he's a STEELERS fan, and therefore so are my boys. Woot!
oh man....you know you could always take a trip to florida.... we'll keep praying! i vote for tea- less likely to disrupt the sleep cycle. but if falling asleep is the key, I'd go for beer or wine!
ps- Go Penn State! Did you know Gary works there?? I think a football road trip is a must-do in the fall. Maybe a blog fest??
