Mike told me a little story tonight...
Last week, in the midst of some car drama (I can get into that later), he had to drive the van to work on Wednesday. His coworker asked him, "If you have the van, how will your wife get to work?"
Mike said something like, "She just rolls out of bed and she's there"
The coworker was confused and asked what he meant.
Mike explained, "Well, she's home with the kids so when she gets out of bed, she's at work"
Mike meant this to be somewhat funny but you know what I liked best?
He didn't respond to the question with anything along the lines of "She doesn't work".
I actually gave him a big hug and kiss because his response let me know that he gets it :)

Nine
Today marks 9 years of wedding bliss for Mike and I. Somehow, we always manage to be arguing about something in the days leading up to our anniversary...which makes the actual day interesting.
Mike and I don't always handle everything perfectly...and recent times have brought us higher stress levels and shorter fuses. But at the end of the day, I love him so much and he is my best friend.
So here's to 9 years and, God willing, the upcoming 9 will see the road rising up to meet us, setting out a more distinct path. We are ready for whatever life has to offer us next!!
Happy Anniversary Honey...you are still my favorite :)
Luckily, we always manage to clear the air and get back on track. Sometimes, we are just overdue for a good talk--with 3 kids constantly interrupting, that's hard to come by. You would think that since Mike has been home more, we would have plenty of chat time...but that is not the case. The children demand the full attention of any and all adults...I am certain other households work the same way.

Way Back Wednesday- Part III
How Mike & I Met: Part 3
Luckily, by the time Mike arrived at my house, I had calmed down a bit and could almost pass for a sane person. We were going to pick up some dinner and go back to Mike's mom's house to eat. I apologized to Mike for being such a lunatic and if my memory serves me, we were chatting and catching up during the drive.
We arrived at the house. No one else was at home. Mike took the food up to the kitchen/dining room area to set things up. Neither one of us remembers why, but for some reason I stayed in the family room to make a phone call. When I walked into the kitchen, I could see that Mike had set up dinner in the dining room, which I thought was nice. I still had no inkling about what was going on. Before we sat down to eat, Mike gave me a long hug and told me how much he loved me. Mike was always especially affectionate when we hadn't seen each other, so this gesture was not out of the ordinary. While we were hugging, he moved his arm/hand down and no joke, in the moment, I kind of laughed and said to him, "It's nice that you're adjusting yourself right now". (I'm a real peach, eh?) As you might be able to guess, the ring box was in his pocket and he was reaching for it.
The next few moments kind of blur together in my mind. Mike was down on one knee, looking very nervous. He immediately asked, "Will you marry me?". I felt my eyes well up with tears and I think I said, "Oh my God, YES!". Of course we kissed and hugged. I didn't really cry because I was just so surprised and happy! I immediately wanted to call everyone we knew and Mike really just wanted to sit down and eat dinner. He had been so nervous and now that I had said yes, I think he was suddenly starving.
So I called my parents and my best friend. Then we ate dinner and just basked in our happy, little glow. Later, we went to see Mike's best friend and announce our news. The rest of the weekend was a whirlwind. We saw family&friends, celebrated my graduation and just had a blast. Mike didn't drive home until Monday morning so that we could meet for breakfast before I went to work. We quickly set a wedding date of June 1, 2002.
And now here we are, approaching 8 years of marriage. I love our history together and I love our present even more! I hope that we will have many stories to tell our children and grandchildren as the years go by. I hope that we are a good example to them and that we are teaching them how wonderful love can be!

Way Back Wednesday
How Mike and I Met: Part One
Mike and I met during the fall of sophomore year (1990). We were both 15 and went to different high schools. He called one of my best friends (Kristen) while I happened to be at her house and I talked to him on the phone. Then we started talking more and at some point, made plans for a "date". Neither of us had our license at the time, so his dad drove us to/from our date. Mind you, I lived about 35 minutes from him, so it was kind of a big deal.
We went to see the movie "The Exorcist III". During the movie, Mike proved himself to be an, ahem, inexperienced kisser. I don't know why we ended up kissing on a first date but that's how it went. He was also maybe a bit nervous and had sweaty hands. What a romeo, eh? I am sure that I myself was equally nervous & I'm not sure what he thought of me overall--other than that he thought I was cute. We also went to a formal dance at his high school that same fall. At some point, my friend Kristen developed a sudden interest in dating Mike as well...and I was not the type to compete for a guy. I felt that maybe he was trying to manipulate the situation a bit (he denies) and things just kind of fizzled out.
I seem to remember talking to him from time to time during the remainder of high school. Then we both went away to college. Mike ended up not finishing and during the fall of my junior year, we started dating again. I really fell for him at that point. I was SO into him. I think he liked me as well but at the time, I would only go so far- if you catch my meaning- and I think that was a problem for him. Because by that time, he definitely had more, ahem, experience than me. We talked several times a week and saw each other whenever I was home. Once or twice, he came to visit me at school. Then during a late night phone conversation, Mike alluded to the fact that he was interested in another girl. I kind of flipped out. I told him that I loved him but was unwilling to be second choice. Things ended immediately- and honestly, I felt empowered that I had stood up for myself and I never looked back. But I still spent some time mending my broken heart :( That was December of 1995.
(we ran into each other once at a local bar in the next 5 years but mike was living with his girlfriend)
Skip ahead to July 2000, Mike was living in Connecticut at the time but came home often to see his mom, siblings and friends in this area. I was living with my parents, trying to finish grad school. One night I came home and my mom said "You will never guess who called". I guessed 5 different people- all incorrect guesses...finally she said "Mike V." My exact response was, "What does that a**hole want?" Not kidding, that's what I said. My mom yelled at me for cursing and said it sounded like he really wanted to talk to me. I waited a couple of days to call him back...he called me again before I had the chance to return his call. He said he was going to be in the area again in a couple of weeks, so we made plans to meet up.
I went to his mom's house to pick him up (there are no good bars/restaurants where my parents live...his mom lives close to all the fun places in this area). I knew as soon as I saw him that he thought I looked good. He had this swooney look in his eyes...and I admit, given the history of him bailing out during our college romance, I felt gratified. It might have been fun to toy with his emotions a bit but the problem was, I also felt a spark...

7 years?!
June 1st of this year marked 7 years of marriage for Mike and I :)
I didn't talk about last Monday because we had a non-fun anniversary due to arguments that were serious but certainly not relationship-threatening. I chose NOT to write at the time because I didn't want to just rant and rave about disagreements that I knew we would work through. It's rare for me to "take the high road" that way but maybe after 7 years, I have learned something?
Our marriage has been blessed in many ways...really, our only downfall is financial matters and we are slowly wading our way to a better place with all of that. We have the support of our families, many wonderful friends and -not least of all- 2 beautiful children and the excitement of adding one more little one to our family. I truly feel that our relationship is made stronger by having so much support from those around us. At the same time, Mike & I truly like being together--we make each other laugh-- we are a good team most of the time-- we understand each other.
Since we have had children, whenever we have ever gone through times where we weren't seeing eye-to-eye, we only need to look at Michael and Liam to know that we are in the right marriage--that we belong together. Our children strengthened our bond in a good way. They give us the inspiration to not take each other for granted.
We also share the same basic values but have enough differences to keep things interesting. I love the way our relationship continues to grow. Of course, the exciting first moments of marriage are incredible. But I wouldn't trade that for what we have now...

Date Night
Last night, Mike & I actually had the closest thing to a date that we've had in a while. It was an "at home" date but it was still fun. The boys went to bed with only minimal drama. We had some Jose Cuervo margheritas (already mixed and super yummy), hung out, played cards, laughed and just talked about nothing in particular. It was SO much fun. There was a time when I thought we would NEVER get to enjoy kid-free evenings again. And now we finally can! It reminded me of what it was like before we had kids. Don't get me wrong, I adore my children but it was nice to have some time together that wasn't all about the boys. We even managed to talk about non-kid related things.
I've mentioned a few times in posts how much I would love to have another child but being out of the newborn/infant phase is nice- should I really mess with that? We have 2 healthy, happy boys- are we pushing our luck to go for a 3rd? I think the timing isn't right at this moment but maybe after the new year we will be ready to take the plunge.
At any rate, it was nice to focus on our relationship and I think we will be trying to have date nights a little more often :)
